Perhaps the star attraction of the park is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This one-day hike is ranked as one of the ten best hikes in the world, and certainly one of the best in New Zealand. The 20.2 km day hike, with an elevation change of about 1196 metres, traverses the volcanic landscape of the park, taking 6–8 hours to complete.

Vatnajokull National Park is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its numerous geological and glacial features - glaciers, waterfalls (most famously Dettifoss and Svartifoss), ice caves, volcanoes, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. The Park is a wonderland for hiking, climbing and adventure sports. Diamond Beach or Breidamerkursandur in southeast Iceland can be accessed easily from the town of Vik (2.5 hours from Reykjavik).
