The ancient and stunningly beautiful Poulnabrone Dolmen is found on the Burren, in Country Clare, Ireland. This simple but striking Neolithic structure is classified by archaeologists as a portal tomb, consisting of two upright portal stones supporting a massive capstone; the rear stone has fallen away. Together they once formed an single enclosed tomb where the remains of up to 33 people have been found. Also found within were a number of artifacts: beads, a pendant, an axe and shards of pottery. It is estimated that it was constructed between 3800 and 3200 BC., making it the oldest Neolithic structure in Ireland, and pre-dating the Egyptian pyramids by 1000 years. Together with the Cliffs of Moher and the surrounding Burren, this has been classified as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Poulnabrone Dolmen is within easy driving distance of Doolin (a jumping-off point for the Aran Islands) and the Cliffs of Moher. A 250 meter, well-maintained path leads from the parking lot to the monument. There are no amenities, and the land surrounding the dolmen is quite rough. Access is free.
